Chances are, if you’re like most small business owners you’re busy. In fact many times you’re on the run and never have the opportunity to sit in front of your computer. Perhaps because of this busy schedule you’re even neglecting your Fan Page. Good news, if you have an iPhone (and just about any other smartphone) you don’t have to! Here’s a few tips on how you can manage your Fan Page on the go from your iPhone.
The very first item you will need to do in order to be able to manage your Fan Page from your iPhone is download the Facebook Pages app. This app is designed specifically to access the pages you are an admin of. If you don’t already have this app you can download it for free in the iTunes store. You might think this is the only tool you need, however it cannot do everything.
iPhone Pages App Cannot:
- Tag Businesses or Fans
- Schedule Posts
- Share posts from other Pages your Page ‘Likes’
- Edit comments
- Hide comments as spam
Because of this we also recommend that you take a minute and access Facebook from Safari, the mobile version of Facebook will automatically load. Scroll to the bottom of your menu (on the left hand side) and hit “Desktop Site” which will open the exact same Facebook layout you see on your desktop or laptop. Add this to your homescreen as a bookmark.
Now that you have easy access to your Pages app and Desktop version of Facebook you can start using these tools to help you get status updates posted regularly and respond to comments. But which do you use the app or the Desktop version, that’s likely your current question.
When I am just checking for notifications on my iPhone, I will first open up the Desktop version of Facebook. The reason for this is it will load Facebook as if I just logged in, showing me what pages have notifications. I do not use the Pages app for this because I found that if the app is left open (which on my phone it often is) it doesn’t always update. Therefore, if I checked the Pages app it may show I have no notifications when in reality, I do.
If I open the Desktop version and I have one or more notifications I automatically switch over to the Pages app. The app will allow me to see what the notification is. This allows me to determine if I need to respond to any comments or messages. If the notification was a comment, I almost always respond to the comment immediately from the app. The only exception to this is if I want to tag the user or another Page, then I open up the Desktop version and access the page just as I would on my laptop.
If I am posting a status update I almost always do so from the Desktop version. This is mainly a personal preference, however I have found that I get higher impressions (which equals more engagement) if updates are done directly from Facebook. This goes back to when Facebook would lower impressions due to them being shared on 3rd party apps. I have no proof that this is true, but regardless I almost always post updates from the Desktop version on my iPhone.
These are the steps and tools I use when managing a Fan Page on the go and only have access to my iPhone. What are some of your techniques to make sure your Fan Page isn’t ignored if you are away from your computer and only have access to a smartphone or tablet?
