While I know this can be a touchy subject with the economy the way it is and people looking for jobs, I don’t mean Outsourcing like most people think of it, I’m not saying go and Outsource your work over seas. In fact its quite the opposite actually, when I talk about “Outsourcing” we are talking about daily activities, tasks and even jobs to another equally or more qualified individual or company who are most likely right in your business’ backyard.
I know for many of you, the thought of giving work or jobs to others might seem scary or even impossible. I was right there with you with questions racing through my mind like: They won’t do as good of a job? What if they bail on the project? Can I keep them busy enough? How will I be able to pay them? etc. All these questions and more. If you are like me and my brothers you don’t want to give up the work you’ve been doing to build your company to where it is. Lets face it, we have our sweat and blood poured into it and how can anyone we hire or work with have the same passion as us.
The other side is the logistics of hiring that new employee! Whoa! What a scary thought that is… Setting up the UI account, Salary, Insurances, Payroll and on and on it goes. Well there may be another way to allow you to alleviate your workload with the menial tasks of running a business or even offloading some of tasks in projects, which in turn will allow you to grow and take your business to the next level. We both know that we can only handle so much business as a one man/women show.
This is where “Outsourcing” comes in, and again not necessarily out of the country. Outsourcing allows you to only give tasks or projects as you need, whenever you want and to specialized individuals or businesses. This allows you to ensure quality.
What should you outsource? Thats a great question! A good place to start is with tasks that bog you down like administrative tasks. These are the jobs that when we started our company’s we didn’t know anything about and take our time from the most important part our our business. Other areas may include marketing, social media management, sales etc. Finding reputable companies or individuals can all be done online or word of mouth.
When looking for an individual or company be sure they are experienced in the area you are looking to outsource. Such as your Social Media strategy, a lot of companies including marketing firms will claim to offer social media services, however do not have the experience in the industry to successfully manage your networks. Make sure you check out their own social media efforts and see how it is be managed. Why would you hire a company that isn’t using these tools themselves. This goes for any industry, make sure you check them out, read the reviews, get references and even interview them and ask questions. This will give you a feel for who they are and what they represent.
A few of the benefits of “Outsourcing”:
- Affordable – at first glance outsourcing may not seem that affordable, however, when you take into consideration taxes, unemployment insurance, salary, training, etc. then outsourcing seems much more affordable because you are only paying for a specialized service and only when you need it or on a per project basis. Also when hiring a company for services such as Social Media management you can get a member of your team for far less than you’d pay an employee, even part time.
- Timing – with outsourcing you are able to use your sources as you need them based on your availability and if someone doesn’t work out you can find a new comapny or individual to take over on the next go round. Outsourcing allows you to free your time, which ultimately is the goal so you can do what you enjoy in your company or focus on continually building and growing.
- Increased Opportunity - sometimes, outsourcing allows you to be able to do different items in your business that you would not be able to do normally. These activities are usually in the marketing department, after all you are not a marketing expert. When your business gets to the point were you’re able to outsource parts of your marketing you are able to not only focus more on building your business and taking care of your customers but also able to see better results with your marketing efforts.
Outsourcing can be a very scary thought for many business owners, however as you can see that by taking the leap you are able to help take your business to the next level. After you’ve outsourced one task and had a great experience you will start seeing how outsourcing, although scary, can be extremely beneficial for your business.
