With all of the recent hype about Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and all of the other Social Media networks it’s no surprise there has been a mad dash of companies joining the Social Media scene. Unfortunately, there are many businesses (both small and large) that never took the time to learn how to properly use Social Media. This results in improperly setup and managed profiles. Which rarely see results and actually can hurt a brand. Lets focus on by far the most popular Social Media network, Facebook. How do you know if your Facebook Fan Page is setup improperly?
If your page contains one or more of the common setup mistakes below you might want to consider taking a little bit of time and giving your Fan Page a makeover, if you don’t you may not ever see results from your Social Media efforts.
1. Missing Information
Facebook automatically provides several information fields that you can fill out. Although these fields are optional it is highly recommended to fill them out completely. Facebook users that land on your page are likely to visit your “Info” page before any other section on your Fan Page, by filling out all of the information fields you are able to provide them with the information they are looking for, if they are left blank they will move onto your competitor’s page that provides the information.
2. Personal Profile
Facebook used to allow businesses to setup a “Business Account,” which was very similar to a Personal Profile. However, these Business Accounts are no longer being offered by Facebook and the only option for a business is a Fan Page or a Group. If you have setup your business as a Personal Profile you are not only violating Facebook’s Terms of Service but you are also missing out on all of the features that make a Fan Page so powerful. The good news is that Facebook does allow you to convert these Personal Profiles into Fan Pages, you will be able to keep your Fans and only have to update some of the information fields.
3. Profile Image Is Square
Facebook actually allows for a Fan Page to have a much larger Profile Image, if your profile image is just the normal small square you are missing out on great branding space. Take advantage of the larger image to increase branding space and provide your Fans and non-Fans easy access to important information such as contact information, website URL, logo, message and slogan.
4. Random Photo Banner
Facebook’s Photo Banner is often an overlooked branding space. If you have not personally selected which photos you want to be viewed at the top of your website you are missing out on a powerful branding tool. This space is a great location to showcase services or special features about your product/service. When setting up your Photo Banner it’s important to remember that your photos are not going to be stationary, create images that are not dependent on them being in a certain order.
5. No Custom Tabs
Facebook allows Fan Pages to create custom tabs. These tabs can be just about anything and really make your Fan Page stand out. One custom tab that almost every Fan Page should have is a Welcome/Reveal Tab. By having this tab setup professionally you are 40% more likely to turn non-Fans into Fans. Other custom tabs can contain information on services, provide testimonials, or even be an area that sells your products.
6. No Vanity URl
As soon as a Fan Page receives 25 Fans Facebook allows that page to create a custom Vanity URL. By setting up a custom URL you are making it easier for your current and potential clients to find your page. If you do not have a custom Vanity URL you are missing out on major opportunity to direct people to your Fan Page.
7. Does Not Match Your Brand
With all of the branding space available on a Fan Page there should be no question who the page belongs too. If Facebook users visit your Fan Page and aren’t sure if they are on the right page you are likely going to lose that potential client. Your Fan Page should not only match your brand but help build it’s awareness by it’s professional setup and appearance.
